History of Math

  • Shreemad Jeevottama Teerth, the 3rd Swamiji of Math Tradition, made a pilgrimage across India.
  • Visited Gokarna kshetra and reached Wadera Math in Bhatkal.
  • Installed the statue of Vittala, found during Gandaki Teertha Yatra, and renamed it Bhoovijaya Vittala.
  • Established a branch of the Math in Gokarna.
  • Gokarna, known as Dakshina Kashi, was a pilgrimage site for those unable to travel to Kashi.
  • As the Math’s popularity grew, visitor numbers increased, leading to the construction of a new, spacious Math.
  • During this time, Portuguese Governors seized the port of Bhatkal, causing insecurity in the area.
  • Shreemad Jeevottam Teerth Swamiji decided to make Gokarna the Central Math and transferred Bhatkal Math to Gokarna for the benefit of visiting disciples.
