History of Math

  • Shreemad Jeevottama Teerth, the third Swamiji of the Math parampara, made a pilgrimage from Rameshwara to the Himalayas and documented his experiences in the book “Teerthavala.”
  • During the pilgrimage, he found three idols in the Shila (Gandaki) river.
    • One idol was established to commemorate the recapturing of the Math near Kotiteertha Gokarn and named Bhovijaya Vithala.
    • The second idol was established at his birthplace Basrur in Shake 1472 (1550 AD) and named Digvijaya Vithala in memory of his pilgrimage.
  • The name ‘Jeevottam’ is unique among the 627+ yativaryaas of the 27 Maths of Vaishnava heritage.
  • Shreemad Lakshminath Teerth, the 16th Swamiji of the Math Tradition, observed Chaturmasa in the Math and renovated it.
  • Shreemad Ananda Teertha, the 17th Swamiji of the Math Tradition and disciple of Shree Purnaprajnya Teerth, traveled to Nagaramath with Kashi Mathadheesh Sumathindra Swamiji.
  • The 20th Swamiji of the Math tradition, Shreemad Indirakanta Teerth Swamiji, carried out the Jeernoddhara of the Math.
  • Kashimathadheesh Shri Sukrateendra Teertha Swamiji met the 20th Yativarya of Gokarna Math and Shishya Shri Kamalanath Teertha in Shake 1859 Magha Shukla Padya (01/02/1938).
  • For the purpose of renovating the Girbhagudi, Shri Vidyadhiraj Teerth Swamiji temporarily shifted Shri Digvijaya Vitthala to the Balalaya. In Shake 1894 Paridhavi Samvatsara Nija Vaishakh Bahula Panchami (02/06/1972), Shri Dwarakanath Teertha Swamiji performed the punar Pratishtha.
  • Shreemad Vidyadhiraja Teerth Swamiji carried out the Jeernoddhara of the front and left side Agrashala in 1998.
  • Shreemad Vidyadhiraja Teerth Swamiji laid the foundation stone for Shri Jeevottam Sabhagraha on 14.12.2000 and inaugurated it on 04.03.2002.
