History of Math

  • Manikyapura (Manki) is a small village located approximately 4 km from Honnavar Taluk.
  • The village faced difficulties in crossing the Sharavathi River to reach Honnavar for religious and social needs.
  • Elders decided to establish a Math to serve as a local religious, social, and cultural center.
  • With consensus from ten community members, they approached Shreemad Indirakanta Teerth Swamiji for blessings and guidance.
  • Swamiji granted divine permission on Shake 1823, Magha Vadya (19/02/1901) to construct the Math with public cooperation.
  • A local committee was formed, and funds were collected from villagers.
  • In Shake 1826, Vaishakha Vadya Dashami, the panchaloha idol of Shri Laxmi Venkatesha was installed in the Math.
  • Financial support for daily rituals was extended by Shreemad Indirakanta Teerth Swamiji and later Shreemad Kamalakanta Teerth Swamiji from Partagali Math.
  • Rituals were performed by appointed priests.
  • Migration of residents for employment made maintaining daily rituals difficult.
  • On Shake 1867, Partheeva Samvatsara, Magha Shukla Dashami, Monday (11/02/1946), the archaka family handed over the temple to Shri Dwarakanath Teerth Swamiji.
  • The Math came under the administration of the Gokarna Partagali Jeevottam Math as its branch.
  • With Swamiji’s blessings, the local population increased, and devotional and social activities grew.
  • A request was made to Shreemad Vidyadhiraj Teerth Swamiji for new land and a more spacious facility.
  • A 17-member committee was formed, and 21 guntas of land were acquired.
  • On 24/05/1981, the foundation stone for the new building was laid.
  • The new Vastu with a stone idol was inaugurated on Shake 1905, Vaishakha Vadya Shashthi (01/06/1983).
  • A new facility was built for Chaturmasa celebrations, including 7 rooms, a kitchen, Agrashala, Gurubhavana, and an assembly hall.
  • In 1998, Chaturmasa was celebrated with great fervour and devotion.
