An overview of the founding of Gokarna math in Mangalore.

  • Brahmins of ten Gotras invited by Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, Shree Parashuram, resided in Gomantaka.
  • During the 15th century, due to Portuguese tyranny and conversion, GSB Brahmins migrated to various places along the western coast of Gomantaka.
  • Some families settled in Mangalore and Basroor, living honorably due to their eclecticism, personalities, and environmental compatibility.
  • The GSB community faced criticism for not having a Guru or qualified scholars to perform rituals.
  • This criticism has been a source of grief since the 15th century.
  • Small temples existed in Mangalore’s surroundings, but no Shakha Maths represented the Gurupeetha.
  • Shree Samstana Gokarna Parthagali Math, the first Gurupeetha of Madhwa Tradition, was established in 1475 by Shreemad Narayana Teerth Swamiji.
  • Subsequent Swamijis established Maths in Basroor, Gokarna, Dicholi, Partagali, and Rhushivan.
  • In 1660 AD, Shree Ramachandra Teerth Swamiji established a temple in Mangalore, installing a Panchaloha idol of Lord Shree Vitthala.
  • The temple became a central spiritual and cultural hub for the GSB community.
  • The Gokarna Math flourished, and devotees included it in their pilgrimage.
  • Shreemad Poornaprajna Teerth Swamiji relocated the temple to Ratha Beedi and installed a golden Shikhara Kalasha in 1764.
  • Shreemad Padmanabha Teerth Swamiji resided at the Math following his pilgrimage to Rameshwaram in 1787.
  • Shreemad Bhuvanendra Teerth Swamiji and his disciple observed Chaturmasa at the Math in 1878.
  • Shreemad Indirakanta Teerth Swamiji enhanced the Math’s sanctity and grandeur in 1911.
  • Shreemad Dwarakanath Teertha Swamiji observed Chaturmasa at the Math in 1948, 1949, and 1972.
