History of Math
- 17th Century Migration: Saraswat community from Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada migrated to various parts of India, including Mumbai, in search of employment opportunities.
- Settlement in Mumbai: A significant number of Saraswats settled in Mumbai, one of India’s four major metropolitan cities.
- Cultural and Spiritual Needs: The growing Saraswat Samaj in Mumbai needed a common place to assemble and uphold their cultural and spiritual traditions.
- Devotion to Kuladevatas and Gurupeetha: Despite relocating, the Saraswats remained devoted to their family deities and revered Gurupeetha.
- Religious Ceremonies: For important ceremonies like marriages and upanayanas, it was customary to travel to Partagali for blessings and guidance.
- Vision of Shreemad Dwarakanath Teerth Swamiji: The 22nd pontiff of the Math envisioned establishing a local Math in Mumbai to ease the community’s difficulties.
- Construction of Math in Wadala: Land was acquired in Wadala for the Math, and the foundation stone was laid on 22nd December 1950.
- Grand Reception: Shri Swamiji’s journey to Mumbai via the coastal route and the grand reception at the Gateway of India remains a cherished event.
- Completion of Shri Dwarakanath Bhavan: The construction was completed successfully, and the new building was inaugurated by Shri Kashi Mathadhish Shri Sudheendra Teerth Swamiji.
- Consecration of Deities: Idols of Shri Rama, Lakshmana, and Seeta were installed, transforming the Math into a spiritual nucleus.
- Annual Celebrations: The site earned the title “Ayodhya of the South” due to celebrations like Shri Rama Navami, Anna Santarpana, and Brahad Rathotsava.
- Ganapati Festival: The Wadala Ganapati Festival became one of Mumbai’s prominent celebrations, drawing eminent personalities and national leaders.
- Ganeshotsava Committee: The committee plays a pivotal role in uplifting students by offering scholarships and honouring academic excellence.
- Shantikunj Sevashram at Panvel: Managed by the Wadala Math, this haven for elders includes a school, medical facilities, temple, dining hall, and accommodations.
- Legacy of Shreemad Dwarakanath Teerth Swamiji: The establishment of Shri Rama Mandir, Wadala, elevated the spiritual and cultural stature of the Saraswat community and continues to inspire generations.
